Secret Santa: 40 gift ideas by budget, from €5 to €20

In Secret Santa, everyone draws a participant’s name and secretly gives them a gift within a budget agreed in advance: a holiday classic at work or with family. Here are 40 ideas for €5, €10, €15 and €20, organised by budget and recipient, plus a way to find a gift they will love: the wishlist of the person you draw.

What budget for a Secret Santa?

Choose a budget everyone can comfortably afford: €5–10 for a large team or a group whose members do not know one another well, or €15–20 among friends or family. The key is for everyone to follow the same spending limit.

A useful reference. On Listopia’s 2025 Christmas lists, at least half the wishes with a stated price cost more than €20 (median price: €25.99). For a Secret Santa, ask participants for wishes below the spending limit.

Ideas are grouped by budget, then by recipient: colleague, man, woman, teenager or student, food lover, home. Each idea appears only once, with its price checked on 10 October 2026 at Cultura or 26 September 2026 at Maisons du Monde. Prices are indicative: check with the retailer before buying. We have not tested these products; they are selected from product information according to our public method.

The full budget. Prices below cover only the product, excluding delivery, wrapping and extras. Agree whether these costs count towards the limit. Before paying, check the basket total, seller and delivery date. Collection in store may be an option if the retailer offers it.

Choosing a gift. Start with habits you know: loose-leaf tea or coffee, cooking or card games, desk size or space in their bag. Check dimensions and care instructions, plus age and player numbers for games. Scented candles, beard accessories and skincare are best when you know the person’s tastes.

Without another purchase. If the group agrees, offer a specific service (repairing a small item or making an afternoon snack), a book from your shelves in excellent condition, or a carefully chosen second-hand item. For homemade gifts, include materials in the budget and list the ingredients.

15 €Friends, a close-knit teamA game to share, an accessory according to taste
20 €Family, close friendsA gift linked to a passion or comfort

Secret Santa gift ideas for less than 5 €

Under €5, choose something small and useful or something that makes them smile: a seasonal mug, a keyring or a small recipe book.

At this price, wrapping matters: attractive paper and a label with the recipient’s name make a difference. Other ideas include a Christmas chocolate bar, a few seasonal tea bags or a succulent in a mini pot.

Free for you: no fees or commission are deducted from your gifts. Some merchant links are affiliate links: the merchant may pay us a commission, at no extra cost to you.

Secret Santa gift ideas from 5 to 10 €

For €5–10, give something useful for everyday life or a small thoughtful gift, without needing to know the person well.

Other ideas: a paperback, a herb-growing kit, honey or jam from a small producer, or touchscreen gloves.

Secret Santa gift ideas from 10 to 15 €

For €10–15, choose a gift based on an interest: games, reading, cooking, sport or wellbeing.

Other ideas: a comic or graphic novel, a hand scrub and cream gift set, gourmet spices, or a good notebook with an attractive pen.

Secret Santa gift ideas from 15 to 20 €

From €15 to €20, you can aim for a more personal gift, or even a personalized gift: an object linked to a passion, a comfort accessory or a game for parties.

Other ideas: a creative kit (candle-making, embroidery or alcohol-free cocktails), a cookbook, a voucher for a favourite bookshop, bowling or laser tag.

What should you choose for a colleague you do not know well?

For a colleague you do not know well, choose a neutral, easy-to-use gift without a size to choose: a treat, a hot drink, a plant, a desk item or a game to play together.

Look at their desk: tea rather than coffee, plants, a sport mentioned during a break… These clues are better than a random gadget.

Avoid: perfume and strongly scented cosmetics, clothes when you do not know the size, jokes about appearance, age or private life, alcohol (unless you know the person drinks it), and bulky items to carry home on public transport.

Four neutral ideas, one for each budget:

Secret Santa Gifts for a Man

For a man, start with his habits rather than stereotypes: coffee, sport, cooking, games or DIY offer better clues than the “gifts for him” aisle.

Suggestions by interest, followed by four specific ideas, one for each budget:

  • Coffee lover: beans from a coffee roaster, a double-walled mug
  • Sports enthusiast: technical socks, a headband, a water bottle
  • Keen cook: a spice blend, an artisan hot sauce, an apron
  • Player : a strategic card game, a metal puzzle
  • DIY enthusiast: a pocket tape measure, a head torch, a multi-bit screwdriver

Secret Santa Gifts for a Woman

For a woman, start with what she enjoys too (tea, reading, sport, gardening, creative hobbies), then choose an idea within your budget.

These leads are valid for everyone: tastes matter more than gender. Then four specific ideas come, one per budget.

  • Tea lover : a loose tea, a tea ball
  • Reader: a paperback novel, a fabric book sleeve
  • Sports enthusiast: a resistance band, a water bottle, a headband
  • Gardener : seeds, a small pot, gardening gloves
  • Creative person: a sketchbook, felt-tip pens, an embroidery kit

Secret Santa gift ideas for a teenager or student

For a teenager or student, choose a useful everyday item (for their phone, desk or small kitchen) or a game to play with friends, rather than clothing, which depends heavily on taste and size.

In a class or year group, the budget is often around €5–10: a simple recipe book or card game fits. Other ideas include a cable or case for their phone model (check first), a sketchbook or a water bottle.

Secret Santa gift ideas for a gourmet

For a gourmet, offer something to cook or serve: a recipe book, a cookie box to fill, an accessory for coffee.

The ideas below are books and objects; no food products are included in this selection. For an edible gift, add a wrapped treat with an ingredient list and ask about the group’s allergies.

Secret Santa Gifts for the House

A mug, teapot or candle suits almost everyone: no size to know, and something useful all winter.

A scented candle is a matter of taste: choose one for someone whose home you know, and opt for a mug or teapot if unsure. Other ideas: an illustrated tea towel, a trivet or a small houseplant.

Québec’s “pige de Noël” and gift exchanges: the same ideas in Canadian dollars and Swiss francs

Québec’s “pige de Noël” and office gift exchanges follow the same rules as Secret Santa: one randomly drawn name, a shared budget and one gift. Only the budget currency changes.

European Central Bank reference rates on 9 October 2026: €1 = CAD 1.5942 or CHF 0.9313. The equivalents below are rounded and indicative, excluding exchange fees; check the rate applied when paying. A Listopia list accepts items from any website, including Canadian and Swiss shops. Prices are displayed in euros, so specify the currency in the gift notes.

This selection uses Cultura’s and Maisons du Monde’s French shops. Delivery to Canada or Switzerland is not guaranteed: check destinations served, delivery times, postage and any import costs, or find an equivalent at a local retailer.

In a game-style gift exchange (gifts randomly distributed or “stolen” in turn), no one knows who will receive what: choose a neutral, unisex idea that anyone could enjoy.

Organize a Secret Santa: the rules to be set before the draw

Before drawing the names, set the budget, the date of the exchange, the deadline for sharing the lists of wishes and exclusions (couples, people living together).

  • The draw: use slips in a hat if you are together. Remotely, ask someone who is not taking part to draw the names and send them in private messages. If someone draws themselves or an excluded person, draw again.
  • The budget : a ceiling, not a minimum, announced in writing in the group.
  • The secret: do not reveal whose name you drew. Put the recipient’s first name on the gift, never your own.
  • Dates : exchange before leave, lists ten days before.
  • Anyone absent: arrange postage or a later handover.

The tip that avoids an unwanted gift: ask for the drawn person’s wishlist

The safest thing is that each participant notes 3-5 wishes under the budget, and that each one consults the list of the person he or she drew.

On Listopia, the organiser creates a collaborative list, such as “Team Secret Santa”, and shares one link in the WhatsApp group, by text message or by email. Everyone joins with their first name and adds their wishes. Pasting a link fills in the title, image and price when the website supports it; an idea without a link works too. No account is required, and each participant can protect their list with a secret code so another person cannot edit it by mistake.

Reserving is optional in a classic Secret Santa: everyone has only one Secret Santa. If you reserve as a reminder, first enable the setting that hides the names of people reserving. The interface then shows only “Reserved” to other participants. Once identified on the list, the recipient cannot see reservations on their own gift wishes.

Example: a list of a participant for a €15 Secret Santa.
