How to choose a gift for your grandparents?

Start from their daily lives and from what they like to share: many grandparents have "already everything", but rarely enough time with their grandchildren or memories gathered.

  • Look at their daily interests: reading, gardening, cooking, card games or music. A gift that fits their routine will be used.

  • Bet on the family Photos, memories to transmit, drawings of grandchildren. These are often the gifts they keep the longest.

  • Offer a moment : a workshop, an outing, a stay or an afternoon of games leave more memories than, one more object.

  • Think about comfort: a soft throw, an e-reader with adjustable text size or an item that is simple to use without instructions.

  • Coordinate as a family: a group gift from children and grandchildren avoids duplicates and makes a bigger present possible.

  • For each idea, we checked the price on 20 October 2026 at Cultura, Fnac, Maisons du Monde, Aroma-Zone or Wecandoo, and on 25 October 2026 at HEYDUDE. Prices are indicative: check them with the retailer before buying. We have not tested these products; they were selected from their specifications using our published selection method.

Gifts of memories: the family and its history

A book to fill, a frame for the pictures of the grandchildren: gifts that tell the family and that are transmitted.

  • A book of memories to complete Grandma or grandpa tells her childhood and family stories for grandchildren.
  • Photos gathered : a multi-view frame, an album or a calendar of photos of the year.
  • A digital Wi-Fi photo frame The family sends their photos from their phone, which is convenient when you live far away.

Offer a moment to share rather than an object

A workshop with a grandchild, a getaway for two or a game together: shared time is often their favourite gift.

  • A workshop for two: pottery, cooking, sewing or woodwork with an artisan, shared by a grandparent and grandchild.
  • A getaway: a night in a guesthouse or a weekend away, with several people contributing if needed.
  • An outing: a show, concert or museum visit, followed by a family lunch.
  • A game for all generations : simple to learn, smart enough for adults, to go out every visit.

Gift ideas for Grandma

For a grandmother, choose something that pampers her or brightens her home, based on her tastes rather than her age.

  • Self-care: hand care products, scented oil, a massage or an afternoon at the spa.

  • Her cosy space: a throw, cosy slippers, a teapot, candle or easy-care plant.

  • Her interests: a book by her favourite author, knitting yarn, seeds for the garden or a cooking workshop.

Gift ideas for grandpa

For a grandfather, choose a gift that brings his interests to life: records, reading or a challenge, preferably something to share with family.

  • Music from his youth: a record player for his vinyl collection, or records by his favourite singers.

  • Reading: an e-reader with adjustable text size, or an illustrated book about his region, hobby or profession.

  • Hands occupied : a puzzle, a board game, tools for gardening or DIY.

  • His comfort: cosy slippers to slip on as soon as he gets home.

Gifts that grandchildren can make themselves

A home-made gift often touches more than anything else: it's enough, a little time and an adult to help.

  • A framed drawing

A portrait of grandma or grandpa, or a drawing of the holiday home, in a simple frame. Write the date and the child's age on the back.

  • The family recipe book

Grandchildren copy and illustrate their grandparents' favourite recipes, then offer them the notebook.

  • The kind words jar

Around ten rolled-up notes, each with a memory or compliment, to open one by one over the weeks.

  • A voucher for time together

An afternoon of games, a walk, a cake to do together: written on a card, it's a real gift, and a date.

Grandmother's Day, Grandfather's Day: What dates?

In France, Grandmothers' Day falls on the first Sunday in March: 7 March 2027. Grandfathers' Day is on the first Sunday in October: 4 October 2026 and 3 October 2027.

  • In France, these are not official celebrations, unlike Mother's Day. Grandmothers' Day was started by a coffee brand in 1987; Grandfathers' Day is more recent.

  • A small gift, a grandchild card or a lunch together are enough: these parties are especially an opportunity to meet.

A list to coordinate the gifts of the whole family

At Christmas, grandparents often ask what to offer to grandchildren, and rarely answer when asked. A shared list rules both.

  1. 1. One list per member, one link

On Listopia, a collaborative list brings together everyone's wishes, including grandparents. It is free and created without registration.

  2. 2. Grandparents reserve without account

They open the link on their phone or computer, see the wishes of grandchildren and reserve what they offer. A relative can also reserve for them.

  3. 3. No duplication, surprise kept

A reserved gift appears as taken for others. By default, the recipient does not see who offers what.

For a bigger gift, such as a stay away, someone can start a contribution pool on the item and each person can pledge an amount. No payment goes through Listopia: you arrange payment among yourselves.
